Tv Advert Evaluation - Ben & Jerry's

First Draft of Advert:

Final Advert:

The Brief:

The brief was to take and rebrand a Unilever product that we would create an advert for. I originally chose to rebrand marmite from adults to kids but ended up rebranding Ben and Jerry’s. From the current advertisement for Ben and Jerry’s it was vastly different from a lot of the other Unilever brands and with its more cartoonish and childish look it seemed simple and obvious to rebrand it from its current target audience of children and young people to older people giving it a more retro, nostalgic look and feel.

The Finished Product and Feedback:

Overall, the message of the advert was to make older people reminisce and feel nostalgic towards the product. I feel that the advert produced was very similar to what we had planned throughout our pre-production, yet the message we had the whole way through was the same we conveyed within the advert. I would hope that the advert would have an impact on the target audience and make them want Ben and Jerrys and make them feel young with the use of nostalgia giving the advert an overall joyous atmosphere.

Questionnaire responses:

Although I saw my questionnaire responses after we had finished the advert they still linked to some of the changes we made throughout the editing process. I had only asked 3 different age groups getting both adults and teenagers to do the questionnaire, yet they all gave different responses to the advert about what they like and disliked. With the responses about what they didn't like about the advert I do agree that the product could have been shown a little more than it was throughout.

As well as the Questionnaire we also got feedback from our peers, about our adverts to gives us things that they liked and didn't like. Going from this we changed the second sequence music and made it quieter and rotated the ending shot to make it straighter compared to the slight angle it was on to start with. As whole I felt that the peer feedback gave useful help I feel that by making these changes it made the advert smoother to watch and made it look less rushed.

Original Edited

Using the same shirt on the actor in both scenes allows the audience to make the connection between the two and recognize that it is the same person. Trying to sell the product to older people with the flashback, could make them think back to when they were younger and how much joy it brought them.

Old Man in Shirt                                                                       Younger Version in Same Shirt

The use of two different songs gives two different effects. The first scene in the old folk's home we used a slower, calmer audio which gave it a sad and depressing feel yet also allowed it to transition into the second piece of audio which was a lot more upbeat and fast compared to the piano piece relaying the youthfulness of the person in the skate park scene as they have more energy and life in them than the old person.
Although we didn’t have an old folk's home which we could film in and had a make shift one, we did use a skatepark for the flashback scenes to make it look more authentic and less made up and forced.

Personal Reflection:

Although we didn’t have a lot of the same scenes as the storyboard originally had the idea and concept were kept the same throughout. The advert was originally going to have two people playing old people and, in the flashback, yet we couldn’t get a second actor. The finished advert turned out very close to the original intention with only a few differences between the pre-production work and the advert.
