Performance Anxiety Final Advert and Pre-Production Evaluation

Final Advert:

Pre-Production

Types of production:

There are multiple different ways a media product can be seen, watched and distributed. Platforms allow people to watch moving image productions on them, some of these include tv’s, computers and phones. The producer distributes the product to places that allow others to watch it, online streaming services, like YouTube and Netflix are examples of distribution service. Some examples of moving image productions could include, advertising, news, music video and short and feature length films.

we created a 90 second short film called performance anxiety, for depict. To distribute our product, we would be able to use the depict competition and or YouTube.

Throughout the production of any media product there needs to be some money being put in to help fund it. A wide range of sources exist to help source any media product. Sometimes the producer will put some of their own money towards the product, like this self-investor could also add some of their own money if they are particularly interested in the product, George Harrison invested around 3 million towards Life of Brian and from this found the production company handmade films. Crowd funding gives the public a chance to contribute money towards the production if they cannot finance it themselves.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monty_Python

Grants are also a good source of funding as it gives a large sum of money towards the production of the media product. The British Film Institute is also a way a film can get funded as they can support and give money towards a film if they don’t have the right funds, for example the BFI was a key financer of High Rise in 2015 giving them around £1 million. Advertisements allow for a different type of funding as they get paid for every time the advert is shown on a platform as well as allowing people to see the product or production meaning they also spend money to see or have it.

Requirements:

All moving image productions require a wide range of thing that money might need to be spent on to help make the production. There is a range of people required to make a production, these could include cast, crew and stunt doubles. The cast are one of the most important things as most productions require someone to be on screen. Crew help to make the movie as they do all the work behind a production, similarly, stunt doubles are also not seen very often on screen as they help to do anything that an actor cannot do/are not allowed to do. As well as this a variety of other things are required for example any equipment, props, food, locations and sets, transport and hair and makeup.

For our depict project we needed very little camera equipment as we only used a camera and a tri pod. A lot of our equipment and props were provided for us so we did not need to spend money on them. We got our location, the drill house, for free, and transport was also free, due to us already having bus passes. To start however we did a lot of paperwork and pre-production before we could start filming as it was vital to have all the confirmation from the talent and the people allowing us to use the location as well as making sure it was safe to film.

Personnel:

Crew:

A low budget short would have a small budget so would not be able to have a large cast and crew, although they would have a cast, crew, equipment, props and a set they would just be smaller and cheaper.

A television programme would have a decent sized cast and crew, a variety of sets and props. This is due to the budget being larger, yet they would have a lot of the same cast, locations and props throughout the whole programme. Most of these programmes would only be able to be viewed on a television or a streaming platform.

A Hollywood feature film would have a lot of time, money and effort go into them. A cast would need to be around 10+ people and the crew would be large. As well as this they would be well trained and good at what they do. The props, locations and equipment would be the best they could afford, and transport and food would be of a good quality. A lot of these could be watched on most streaming platforms.

Within our group we allocated roles based on talent and experience. Although we all did a lot of the work pre-production together, Phoenix was the only one trained to use the equipment so me and Huck did all the filming.

Cast/other contributors:

Other than the crew a lot of the cast must be good at what they do, most films also have extras as they must have a wide variety of people to fill a background in the scenes. Health and safety of a cast is also important as the producer needs to ensure the safety of the actors, so they have people trained behind the scenes to help. Other media productions could have hosts or interviewers/interviewees. as well as witnesses and specialists within a documentary or interview.

Time:

We were given 6 weeks overall, with 2 weeks to plan, 2 weeks to film and 2 weeks to edit our production. And throughout this we met every one of our deadlines for this although we had some set backs during our planning time. However, in a professional setting if people do not meet deadlines the producer or director could get fired or you could go over budget if you did not meet deadlines provided, in 2005 King Kong went over budget by around $32 million gaining it a budget of $207 million which they made back at the box office. The problem with not meeting deadlines could mean that the director or producer might not do another film for a long while or ever again, and the actors in the film may also not get to do another film for a while as they all could been seen as unreliable to other people.

Equipment and facilities:

All media productions need a range of equipment to create them. To rent a lot of equipment if you don't have any a facility house is required, which can give you a wide variety of filming equipment to use. Within Norfolk a few different facility house can be found, Wex Photo/Video in Norwich, they offer rental, repair, trade-in and allow you to  buy equipment.                                                                    Rates cards are also very useful when filming anything as they allow you to see what you can advertise and where and for how much at a time. this can be for a variety of things, such as for websites, magazines and television advertising.      With our project we used a small amount of equipment throughout and mainly only used a camera.                        https://www.wexphotovideo.com/

Location:

Location recces are used to scout out a location that you are thinking of using to help find the location that you want to film at. Location releases are similarly to this however they give a person permission to film at that specific location. For our production we chose to film at the drill house in great Yarmouth where we could get all the equipment/props we needed for free and have a safe space to film.

To assess any of the risks a risk assessment was filled out. This makes sure that any risks and problems that could occur have be thought about and considered and that people are thinking before they go and film to keep the cast and crew safe. As well as this we had people on site to help if we had any problems.

Materials:

Moving image productions require a vast array of materials. Some of these could be for research purposes like archives, artifact, or newspapers. These can be useful if a moving image production is about a historic event or a very niche subject that they may not know a lot about. Some fiction products also research into similar topics to help them find out more about what they could possibly make.

When certain materials are used a considerable amount of time goes into financial considerations for these materials. A lot of materials need to have more money spent on them than others as they need to be of better quality. Most of the equipment for example would have more spent on it then any of the props for moving image production as they need the equipment for the whole production whereas they may only need the props for a small amount of the production. Soundtracks and audios are also a material that need to be considered as they need to be thought about due to the amount of time and money that go into getting them, however some productions do use original soundtracks, for example The Good the Bad and the Ugly, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.

Legal issues:

If a producer uses a certain material when making a media production and does not ask for permission when using the material that they have not commissioned or is not their own, they could possibly get taken to court or fined for using it. Copyright gives its owner the exclusive right to copy, distribute, and display usually for a limited time.  An example of this is The Fifth Element (1997) was called out by Jean Giraud, a talented artist, and Alejandro Jodorowsky, a French film maker and comic book writer for being a copyright of their comic book series, yet the claim was dropped as Giraud worked on concept art for the film.

We had an original idea and script, so we didn’t plagiarize anything as well as having our music composed for us this led to us not having to worry about copyright whilst producing our moving image production.

With any production you would need clearance, permission to use something or for something to happen. Public liability insurance is an important thing when producing a media product as it covers any costs for claims or accidents on sets. A lot of film and tv sets have accidents occur whilst filming some more sever than others and some having more sever repercussions than others. On set of XXX (2002) a stunt double was killed by a collision with a bridge doing a bike stunt and died on impact, yet was left in the film as a tribute. On the other hand on the set of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016) a stuntwoman was nearly killed during a motorbike crash leaving her arm to get amputated, and then later filing a lawsuit against the writer and director.

All productions need a completion guarantee/insurance as it means that the production will have a finish date and will have a budget for the whole project which they are supposed to finish within, sometimes however the production will go over the budget and need more money putting into the production as well as being delayed so it doesn’t get released on the date give. https://movieweb.com/movies-accused-of-copyright-infringement/ https://www.atchuup.com/horrible-movie-set-accidents/ https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/lives-lost-scene-timeline-fatal-set-movie-accidents/

Regulations:

Within media there are a range of regulatory bodies. OFCOM being a major regulatory body as they regulate the TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate. They also regulate when content can and cannot be shown or heard through these platforms.

The BBFC are also a major regulatory body as they manage any of the age rating that are put on media productions. These range from U, PG, 12A, 12, 15, 18 and 18R. They look at issues such as bad language, dangerous behavior, discrimination, drugs, horror, nudity, sex, violence, and sexual violence, when making recommendations. They also consider context, tone, and impact - how it makes the audience feel - and even the release format - for example, as DVDs, Blu-rays and VoD content are generally watched at home, there is a higher risk of under-age viewing.
